BBC Worldwide have today announced a new global tour event intended to promote the début of the Twelfth Doctor in the BBC One science-fiction drama Doctor Who. Timed to coincide with the launch of the revived show's eighth (or thirty-fourth overall) season, the so-called 'World Tour' will take lead stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and executive producer Steven Moffat to eight different nations and five different continents in their valiant quest to build up as much anticipation as humanly (or indeed Time Lord-ly) possible.
There's been no news as of yet on whether one or more episodes of Season Eight will be broadcast at the various events, but you can bet your bottom rel that the production team won't come empty-handed. Here's a round-up of what Capaldi, Moffat and BBC Cymru Wales' Rhodri Talfan Davies have to say on the unprecedented promotional campaign:
- STEVEN MOFFAT- "I've always thought we'd all be a lot safer if the Doctor conquered the world, instead of the Daleks. Now with Jenna and Peter leading the charge, it looks like it's going to happen. I'll be bringing up the rear to handle the exposition scenes, and maybe carry some bags."
- PETER CAPALDI- "It's fantastic that so many people across the world love Doctor Who. After eight months solid filming deep in the world of monsters, Jenna and I are thrilled to be heading for the Planet of Fans."
- RHODRI TALFAN DAVIES- "Where better to start the World Tour than the Doctor's home for the last decade [Cardiff, the first stop on the tour]? The sight of the TARDIS and marauding aliens is now a familiar part of Welsh life - though they still scare the life out of the traffic wardens. There is a real sense of excitement and anticipation about the new series - and I know Peter and Jenna are going to be a breath-taking new team. Roll on August!"
Over the course of the twelve-day journey, the trio of Who icons will be visiting the following destinations (although the Moff won't be there the whole way due to other commitments): Cardiff (UK); London (UK); Seoul (South Korea); Sydney (Australia); New York (US); Mexico City (Mexico) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Stay tuned to On-Screen for all of the latest news updates on Season Eight, The World Tour and the impending 10th Anniversary of the series' resurrection in March 2015...
Doctor Who: The World Tour will kick off in Cardiff on August 7th and will conclude in Brazil on August 19th, and the first episode of Season Eight will therefore probably première on BBC One and BBC America this August 23rd.
