Director Roberto Orci has today announced the first details on the tone of Paramount Pictures' upcoming follow-up to their hit 2013 science-fiction motion picture Star Trek Into Darkness. Taking place shortly after the events of Into Darkness, the third instalment in the rebooted franchise of big-screen blockbusters will once again star Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto amongst plenty of other beloved international thespians.
One man who won't be beaming himself back up to the U.S.S. Enterprise in the sequel, however, is J.J. Abrams. In fairness, the reasons for his departure from the director's chair are fairly clear-cut: the Super 8 helmer's direct ties to a certain film project called Star Wars Episode VII are far too significant to allow him to take time off for one of the other biggest cinematic science-fiction sagas (not to mention Harrison Ford's injuries, which are reportedly causing problems aplenty over at Pinewood at present).
Enter Orci, who had this to say on the tonal aspects of the next Star Trek flick: "The first two films [were examples of] an origin story. It was about [the Enterprise crew] coming together. [...] In this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space." Well, colour us intrigued, though after Into Darkness burnt us last year and subsequently earned itself an average 3* score from On-Screen, the proof will very much need to be in the pudding here. Stay tuned to On-Screen for more info on what's to come for the Star Trek film series in months ahead...
The much-vaunted successor to Star Trek Into Darkness will materialize in cinemas worldwide in 2016.
