IO Interactive have today announced the development of Hitman: Sniper for release on mobile devices later this year. A spiritual successor to the publisher's surprisingly accomplished real-time-strategy handheld video game Hitman GO, this third-person-shooter application will once again be developed over at Square Enix Montreal and should probably feature a self-contained narrative which takes place before the events of 2012's hit stealth-em-up Hitman: Absolution (a sequel to which is currently in development at IO for release on next-gen consoles, but don't hope to hear anything about it until later in 2014).
Now, we could proceed to explain to you how Sniper works and what its developers hope to achieve with the project overall, but in this instance, we'll hand over to Square, who've done a worthy job of summarising those aspects: "We've designed Hitman: Sniper to be a massively competitive sniping game that will focus on the subtlety of execution. You'll need to have your wits about you to complete scenario-driven contracts that contain a number of targets and assignments. Each one is designed to have a high level of replayability, not only to fine-tune your approach but to explore creative alternatives and to achieve the ultimate score on the leaderboards." Whilst we had plenty of fun with IO's take on the sniper sub-genre with Absolution freebie Sniper Challenge two years ago, the notion of gaining a second free-to-play app starring Agent 47 is simply too enticing an opportunity to pass up. Mark our words, this could be the one to watch for handheld video game consoles...
Hitman: Sniper will retail for iOS and Android mobile devices (including tablets) this Autumn.
