Who: Victory Of The Daleks Retrospective (R: 4/5)
Yes, it's the one that introduces those new Daleks, probably the most controversial creation of the Matt Smith era so far and certainly one that is likely to be laughed at years from now. Sadly, the new incarnation of pepper pots has somewhat ruined Victory Of The Daleks' reputation since its broadcast, and I'm pretty sure if you go back and have a second viewing you'll actually find despite their bold colours the Doc's new arch-enemies aren't all that bad at all. On top of that, this is the best historical story Doctor Who has seen since its return, reeking of wartime spirit and containing a superb casting in Ian McNeice, perfectly portraying the cigar-chewing, iconic Winston Churchill (I much prefer this to seeing Harry Potter's Wormtail trying to find the right way of portraying the Prime Minster for too long in The King's Speech) and really bringing across the dilemma of whether it is morally right to use the galaxy's greatest monsters to stop the Nazis or to wait it out and see how history takes its course. Matt and Karen do wonders as always, especially as the plot threads of the reappearing cracks in time start to seed their way into their characters' minds. Victory Of The Daleks is, just as writer Mark Gatiss promised, a thrilling 45-minute war movie, even if our favourite foes were a little hard to stomach first time round and things got a tad unrealistic!
