WORLD EXCLUSIVE: LEGO Pirates Of The Caribbean Impressions
After eight LEGO games, I was dubious that this latest iteration, based on the four Pirates Of The Caribbean films, could bring anything new to the table...I was wrong. Developer Traveller's Tales have perfectly captured the light-hearted tone of the movies, recreating Johnny Depp's drunken swagger as Captain Jack Sparrow and adding a whole lot of hair to the front of his face (it works, though). I tried the first level, taken from the opening scenes of Curse Of The Black Pearl where Will faces off against Jack in the ironmongers and later breaks him out of prison to rescue Elizabeth in a British ship. There seems to be a lot more in the way of cutscenes in this instalment, but to be fair there's a lot of plot to cover and a lot of room for comedy in said videos, which TT Games manages with bravado. So many things have been changed for the better- you can now hold down a button to select from multiple characters, or to bring up Jack's compass so as to guide you to objectives, and best of all the possibility of falling off ledges in the somewhat iconic side-scrolling battles taken from the films is removed as your character will 'stick' to platforms during sword fights. I didn't get too much time at Gadget Show Live to see what else the game has in store since TT were only showing off the opening level, but provided the dev has maintained variety throughout the adaptations of all four movies then this is one video game I cannot wait to review! It's out May 13th, but sadly I will need you to wait a bit longer to find out just how good this is...more on that later.
