Remember when Russell T Davies worked on projects
other than those related to
Doctor Who and its spin-offs? I don't blame you if you don't, seeing as Davies headed the revamped sci-fi drama from 2005 to 2009, and helmed both
Torchwood and
The Sarah Jane Adventures until both shows met their apparent ends last year. Nevertheless, Russell is now returning with a brand new children's show,
Aliens Vs. Wizards, on CBBC later this year. Set across twelve thirty-minute instalments, the new series will focus on teenage schoolboys Tom and Benny as they try to stop the evil Nekross from gaining their magical powers and enslaving the planet Earth. It sounds like a decent premise for what could well be a great spiritual successor to
Sarah Jane with the passing of Elisabeth Sladen, and moreso it'll be great to see what Davies can do now he's free of the constraints of the Whoniverse. "Writing for children is the biggest challenge of all," says Russell, "and I think CBBC stands right at the heart of broadcasting...so I'm delighted to launch this show, a true nationwide collaboration- a wild, funny, thrilling and sometimes scary collision of magic and science fiction."
Aliens Vs. Wizards will commence filming this Spring, and air on BBC1 over the Autumn season.
