Game Of The Year 2011: Readers' Choice

To be absolutely honest to you, dear readers, I don't blame you one bit for naming The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim your Game of the Year 2011- despite all of its prominent bugs and glitches, underneath those lies one of the most compelling experiences of the entire year, perhaps the best role-playing game ever and an infinite wealth of replay value. The sweeping narrative of the Dragonborn's quest to rid the world of Tamriel from Alduin's tyranny is epic to say the least, but that it forms such a minor part of the overall product is testament to Bethesda's making sure that players won't stop playing this until they've sunk weeks upon weeks into increasing their level, facing off against dragons and discovering all of the magical secrets this sensational, vast open-world holds for us to discover. That the visuals and soundtrack hold up so well against the sheer mass of Skyrim is moreso impressive with hindsight. But above all, it's the sheer fun factor of Skyrim that will keep players such as myself returning to this fantastic RPG time after time, undiminished by its occassional immersion-breaking bugs and the predictability of its main storyline because those are such petty gripes within the context of the colossal achievement Bethesda has made, beckoning us towards the next generation of consoles while showcasing everything the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can offer us until the new hardware ships. We've got a couple of months now where there are very few headline game releases, but I have a feeling that that won't bother many players- right now, many of us are too busy clocking up hours in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to care, and if you're not doing the same, get your priorities straight! A well-deserved choice for Game of the Year from you guys, to be sure.
