Our first play-test of one of 2014's most anticipated games has suffered a setback!
Activision and Bungie have today announced a delay in the global release window of the online beta demo of their upcoming science-fiction shooter Destiny. Set to launch on both current- and next-generation consoles, this rather astounding MMORPG will inhabit a narrative universe which is completely isolated from Bungie's previous franchise, Halo (except in the realms of fan fiction, of course).
The multiplayer trial's previous projected launch window was admittedly pretty vague, listed as 'early 2014' on the game's official website until today. Had it launched within the first quarter of 2014 or so, we'd at least have had something to fill the dishearteningly lengthy gaps between major retail releases such as Thief and South Park: The Stick of Truth in the next couple of months, but we suspect that few fans out there will truly bemoan the developers' marketing decision to hold off until the beta is in a state that will all-but-guarantee subsequent pre-orders. Those players who pre-order Destiny now, however, will be guaranteed a place on the beta, whereas no confirmation has been made as of yet as to how limited spaces will be for those aiming to hold off on a purchase until they've tested the much-vaunted online experience.
Destiny's multiplayer beta will launch on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network this Summer, and the full retail product will ship for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on September 9th.
