We are saddened to report the tragic passing of John Henson. The son of Muppets creator Jim Henson left us yesterday at the age of 48, having suffered an intense heart attack in his home in Saugerties, New York which took its toll long before he could be hospitalised.
John's death comes just months after the passing of his mother Jane in April 2013, representing the second crushing blow for the Henson family since Jim's demise in 1990. The American puppeteer formerly starred as the beloved character Sweetums in a variety of Muppets productions including Muppets Tonight, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Muppets Treasure Island and The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. Although our knowledge of his work beyond carrying his father's legacy is limited, no follower of Henson's iconic puppets will hold any doubt as to the great extent to which John endeavoured and succeeded in ensuring that the Muppets have not been forgotten in the twenty-four years which have followed their creator's passing- quite the opposite, in fact.
My thoughts, prayers and consolations go out to John's family and friends in this period of deep grief and necessary cherishing of the time that they spent in his company. This time around, my options in terms of a relevant video or quotation to assist as a final retrospective on this acclaimed puppeteer's life were few due to his limited YouTube/social media exposure, so instead, I've selected a clip which I believes best represents the extent to which (thanks to actors and puppeteers such as John) the Muppets live on and thrive today.
