Programmer Dong Nguyen has today announced that his iOS and Android video game Flappy Bird will cease distribution this week. The flight-survival title involved players using their device's touch-screen to navigate a small bird through an increasingly hazardous obstacle course, an infuriatingly simple set-up which has amassed considerable scorn from those players struggling with its challenging difficulty level.
So far, the developer's tweets regarding his decision to remove the game from Apple and Android's App Stores haven't been particularly illuminating, reading as follows:
I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore.
— Dong Nguyen (@dongatory) February 8, 2014
It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore.

If legality conflicts are out of the question, then we might speculate that various (potentially abusive) comments in Nguyen's inbox have been the source of his decision, as was the case with Phil Fish's cancellation of his sequel to the indie hit Fez last year. If so, we send our condolences to Dong- it has to be said, the internet in its present state is a harsh environment for budding developers (and commenters attempting to hold a balanced, intellectual argument in general, frankly), and we're only too glad to see his affirmation that he will continue to develop and release video games in the foreseeable future. What better way could there be to prove the haters wrong?Flappy Bird will cease digital distribution on iOS and Android devices tomorrow, February 8th. In other words, if you're looking to get ahold of it, make sure to do so tonight and to refrain from deleting it from your mobile phone...
