Activision have today revealed new details on their upcoming third-person-shooter video game Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. Set to launch alongside this Summer's explosive Michael Bay blockbuster Transformers: Age of Extinction, Rise will ship on current-generation and next-generation consoles alike.
In case you missed the announcement trailer which premièred on IGN over the weekend, we've once again inserted it below this article's main text. For now, though, here's our round-up on what we know so far regarding the Edge of Reality-developed product:
- Rise of the Dark Spark's core narrative will act both as a sequel to High Moon Studios' acclaimed spin-off instalments War of Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron and as a "companion" to Bay's impending revival of his Transformers film franchise. The official word is that the game "[goes] beyond the movie by uniting the universe of director Michael Bay's Transformers movies with the ever-popular Cybertron universe." Expect to see familiar faces and gameplay mechanics from both sectors of the series, although don't get your hopes up for a success on the scale of Fall (9/10) just yet, since Edge of Reality are a relatively untested developer in the realms of licensed gaming.
- More than 40 different transforming 'bots from both the Autobot and Decepticon factions ("from past and present", no less) will be available for players to take control of in the campaign and its accompanying online multiplayer segment, including (but naturally not limited to) Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the début outing of fan-favourite Dinobot Grimlock.
- We'll validate this one way or the other come release day, but Activision are describing Edge of Reality's gameplay engine as enabling "nimble, fast-paced running-and-gunning combat" along with vehicular action played out on an open-world-esque scale. Watch this space...
- Lastly, Fall of Cybertron's finest multiplayer match type- Escalation- is back in action here, this time featuring refined defence mechanics, famed series antagonists and an upgraded levelling system that gives players the opportunity to carry over their levelled-up characters from the main campaign to the extensive online component and vice versa.
Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark will kick into gear on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo WiiU, Nintendo 3DS and PC this June.
