All the details on the most cynical ratings-grab since Nick Fury's SHIELD cameo!
Fox have today announced the production of an episode of their animated comedy The Simpsons themed around the LEGO brand. As any viewer who hasn't been living under a rock for the past month will notice instantly, the news comes hot in the wake of the release of Warner Brothers' incredible CGI-powered motion picture The LEGO Movie, so represents not so much a bold step forward for Matt Groening's rapidly ageing series as yet another desperate attempt to reclaim the ratings highs it once achieved on its own merits.
Regular followers of On-Screen may well have registered the consistent lack of articles focusing on all things Simpsons of late (and, in fact, in the entirety of the blog's history, there's been less than five articles that have dealt directly with the programme itself). The reasoning behind this is pretty simple- at least in this writer's humble opinion, this over-stagnated project lost its appeal a long time ago, and has been riding the waves of its paradoxically enduring mainstream appeal for at least ten years longer than it has deserved. Anyway, enough of our lamentations and expression of bewilderment at the show's survival, here's the synopsis for the episode in question, Brick Like Me (the series' 550th outing, incidentally): "Homer wakes up in a world where his family and everyone in Springfield are made of LEGO. Will he be able to "put together" how he got there and how to get back home before he's stuck in the brick world forever?"
The Simpsons: Brick Like Me will air on Fox this May 4th. (Honestly, though, will any of us really prioritise watching it over telling everyone that we come across "May the 4th be with you"? Thought not.).
