Alexander Dumas' iconic swash-bucklers will be back for more historical exploits in 2015.
The BBC have today announced the commissioning of a second season of their historical drama The Musketeers. Based on Alexander Dumas' 17th Century novel The Three Musketeers, the studio's latest action-adventure programme stars Tom Burke, Howard Charles, Santiago Cabrera and Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi, and was created by My Week With Marilyn's screenplay writer Adrian Hodges.
Since Sherlock has yet to be officially commissioned for a fourth season by the BBC (though rest assured, it is coming, unless the broadcasters wish to ditch one of their biggest ratings behemoth!), the re-commissioning of Hodges' drama here is a sure sign of confidence that it will continue to perform for the remainder of its first season. Indeed, original drama seems to be a top priority for the Beeb right now, with Atlantis, In The Flesh and Our Girl all joining Musketeers in the list of recently-created projects which are set to return for further seasons in the immediate future. Fans of the studio's long-term series needn't fear either, though, as their execs know a ratings hit when they see one, and therefore Doctor Who, Call The Midwife and the like are all sure to be around for a good while yet...
The Musketeers continues today with its fourth episode at 9pm on BBC One and will return to the channel for a second season of adventures in Spring 2015.
