It's Agent 47 as you've never seen him before...no, seriously.
Square Enix have this week revealed that Hitman GO is currently in development for release on handheld devices. Set in a different timeline to the core franchise of games based on the murderous exploits of Agent 47, GO will be developed by Square Enix Montreal rather than the series' usual helm IO Interactive.
What's more, it'll be the first instalment in some time to take the Hitman saga in a completely different direction to its third-person-shooter roots. Rather than playing through GO's loose narrative directly from the titular protagonist's perspective, fans will control a series of diorama-esque scenarios in which 47 must outwit increasingly adept and numerous opponents in the most creative and least intrusive manner possible. On one level, taking such a unique approach seems like an inspired decision on SE Montreal's part, but at the same time, they're likely to get burned commercially if they stray so far from the status quo that their addition to the franchise might as well be an isolated entity. All the same, here's hoping that the former eventuality comes to pass, as either way, it looks as if we've got a long wait until IO's next full-blown console iteration.
Hitman GO will launch on iOS and Android devices this Spring.
