Fanboys Review (2.5/5)
Four boys travelling cross country to a movie maker's home and stealing a copy of a movie before it airs worldwide sounds like one of the worst concepts ever heard for a feature film, and for the most part the execution isn't much better: none of the actors even border on likable at any point, the references are often too complex for newbies to the Star Wars universe and the mock-psuedo battles between fans of Wars and Star Trek have been done before so frequently the retread feels tiresome. There are, however, some moments where Fanboys gets close to being a decent night's viewing- one of the protagonists gets enraged by a Trekkian's comment that "Han Solo's a b**ch!", and several major stars of the original trilogy such as Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams make cameos that will sate the appetites of anyone who has ever been excited by the words "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...". Why, then, do these highlights not warrant a higher mark? Because, dear reader, Fanboys makes the big mistake of assuming everyone who watches it knows their Yoda from their Y-Wings, and even for someone like myself who's watched the films, read the books and rode the theme park simulator, that's still a very careless error to make in the world of film in this day and age. Fanboys is a classic example of an unbalanced flick rushed out just months after it entered production, falling prey to comic-emotional storylines that most of its predecessors and successors had/have the decency to try to avoid treading on. Much as I hate to say it, the Force is anything but strong with this one.
