It is a period of civil war, as the iconic saga continues this Summer...
Walt Disney Pictures have today confirmed the production of a direct-to-TV animated film based on their upcoming TV series Star Wars: Rebels. In a similar vein to the box office release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2008, the movie will effectively act as a feature-length opening episode for Rebels ahead of the show's full première later this year.
That's not to say that Disney's latest animated motion picture (set in the twenty-year period between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope) will be limited to a small screen broadcast, of course. The studio's press release revealed that they intend to release "a movie and a series of shorts on Disney Channel", but the listed channel could apply only to the latter productions and if so, then another box office launch may not be out of the question either. Clarification on the matter should arrive over the next few weeks, with the only substantial evidence working against such a hypothesis being that J.J. Abrams and his Episode VII production team might well be hesitant to allow another Star Wars project to hit the big screen before their own revival of George Lucas' beloved sci-fi universe. Stay tuned to On-Screen in the weeks ahead for all the latest updates on Episode VII, Rebels and the franchise's return overall!
Star Wars: Rebels will début with a TV movie and a series of shorts this Summer on Disney Channel, and Season One will commence broadcasting this Autumn.
