2011 Films To Watch #2: Sherlock Holmes
Really, how can a sequel be so near the top of my Most Anticipated 2011 Films list? (Brace yourself for #1, then!) Simply put, Sherlock Holmes 2 is anything but 'just another sequel', looking to take our famous detective to new territory. Most of my excitement brews from the sheer tenacity and quality of the original film (5/5) that hasn't diminished since its release in 2009, rebooting the franchise with Robert Downey Jr performing a realistic rendition of the man down Baker Street and Jude Law a convincing Watson. Moriarty is going to be the prime antagonist this time around, but knowing Arthur Conan Doyle's novels and the way they tend to be adapted still expect a gripping mystery for Holmes to solve before the infamous confrontation of the arch-enemies, the villainous professor played here by Jared Harris (off Mad Men, due to première here on Sky Atlantic this Spring). Meanwhile Sherlock's brother Mycroft makes a cameo, too, but not played by Mark Gatiss as in the BBC's Sherlock drama (who is not-so-coincidentally a writer for the same show, returning this Autumn for Series Two), instead portrayed by the comedian Stephen Fry, so obviously adding even more laughs than Downey Jr is capable of providing. Speaking of Iron Man himself, I'm quietly holding some reservations as to how much vigour Downey Jr can put into this, Captain America (possibly a cameo there) and The Avengers (2012), but am always fine to be proved wrong. Sherlock Holmes 2 hits on December 16th and I for one can't wait.
