Apache: Air Assault Review (5/10)

Apache: Air Assault is exactly the type of downer of a game that I'd hoped 2010 wouldn't end on. Little effort seems to have been made to distinguish the title from other genre legends like Ace Combat or Tom Clancy's HAWX, and for that reason Air Assault feels like a mediocre, unsurprising addition to an already crowded gaming genre. For a start, piloting the aforementioned 'copters is a horrendous affair that will be quickly forgotten by gamers and casual pilots alike. As with so many other entries in the genre, the graphics on offer here aren't exactly going to set the world alight, outright bland and like so much else in Apache, forgettable. Actually, the final word of the last sentence is probably the best way to summarise Air Assault: once you've breezed through the easy campaign, there's little to bring you back (and that's if you can endure the mediocrity of single-player) and so it won't be a game that lasts long in the memory with the oncoming storm of titles set for release in 2011. In which case, there's really little reason to bother playing it.
