2011 Films To Watch #6: Captain America
As the first Iron Man movie ended in 2005, we saw Nick Fury talk to Tony Stark about something called "the Avengers initiative". Six years on, and we're nearing ever closer to that same team of heroes being put together on the big screen for the first time in film history as The Avengers hits in Summer 2012. Before that, though, we're getting Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger in May and July respectively, the latter one of the most promising projects of this year! Funnily enough The First Avenger takes place decades before Thor crashes to Earth, Mr Stark receives a metallic heart and Bruce Banner gets angry, set in World War II America shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbour. Deemed unable to fight for the U.S army, Steve Rogers joins up to a secret military project called Rebirth, and is soon transformed into a super-soldier built to take on the Red Skull and his infinite army. In any other circumstance this would be a fairly by-the-books premise, but that Captain America's movie début will form the final stepping stone in the Avengers plot arc established as I mentioned in 2005 is a thought to get truly excited by! Chris Evans is no stranger to the Marvel universe having already appeared in the (admittedly iffy) Fantastic Four series as the Human Torch twice now, and with his arch-nemesis portrayed by none other than Hugo Weaving (see the Matrix and Lord of the Rings) and an evil assassin played by Richard Armitage (out of the BBC version of Robin Hood and future Thorin Oakinshield in The Hobbit 2012/13 two-parter)- and that's without even mentioning Men In Black legend Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips- so there's definitely a lot of stars on-board and thus it's been considered a major instalment in the Avengers saga in its own right. Captain America: The First Avenger is out on July 22nd, and comic book fans owe it to themselves to see it!
