2011 Films To Watch #9: X-Men First Class
The X-Men film franchise has been on a downward spiral ever since writer Zak Penn killed off dozens of Marvel's famous mutant team in X-Men 3 (2.5/5), only producing a naff prequel tale in Origins: Wolverine (2/5), so it was only right that a new team signed on to revamp the series. Even more reassuring is that both the scribe and director of the new screenplay X-Men: First Class worked on the hilarious satirical comedy Kick-Ass, making it one of the most promising superhero films of 2011. First Class is an adaptation of another comic incarnation of the team, set decades before Wolverine met Cyclops, Phoenix and co and with an adventerous premise of Charles Xavier and Eric Lehnsherr discovering their powers and forming a school for those with gifts like theirs. As any fan will know, though, the future Professor X and Magneto are doomed for an everlasting war between the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants, a tragic split that will be at the very least touched upon in First Class, but not before antagonists the Hellfire Club shake things up for the human and mutant worlds with a plot that could tear Earth apart! Speculation is rife too that Apocalypse will make an appearance, which probably wouldn't be too much of a strech seeing as the comics never portrayed the aformentioned enemies as solo adversaries in their own right, but we'll have to wait till First Class' May release to see whether the X-Men are truly back on form with James McAvoy (Xavier) and Michael Fassbender (Magneto) leading them!
