Smallville Season 3 Retrospective

The third season of Smallville entered brave new territory as Clark Kent was forced to face the lure of his destiny through the callings of his Kryptonian father and struggle to acknowledge that friend Lex Luthor could one day be his arch-nemesis. Despite this, Smallville still retained its irksome nack for the back-and-forth relationship of Clark and Lana Lang, a trait which became ever more apparent as the series went on. Similar aspects included Pete's emotional anguish at keeping his friend's huge secret and Chloe's inability to let go of past differences with her room-mate Lana, both of which made for a season that felt too drawn-out, often lacking the action tone that a series about the rise of Superman should really pack constantly. The finale, Covenant, saw Clark challenged by his supposed Kryptonian friend Kara while ending his friendship with Lex as he discovered Luthor's continuing investigations into where Kent came from. As cliff-hangers go, Clark entering his destiny, Lex being poisoned and Chloe killed by an explosion all manage to get the adrenaline pumping for Season Four, ending a somewhat uneventful season on a high (of sorts).
