2011 Games To Watch #6: L.A Noire
Anything by Rockstar Studios is worth looking out for, and short of another Grand Theft Auto there looks to be no bigger present for the developer to give us this year than L.A Noire. A detective crime-thriller, Noire harkens back to the days of 1940s America, a time when crime was rife on the streets and the only people standing between justice and total anarchy were the police. For once Rockstar isn't asking you to provoke the latter for fun come May the 20th, instead tasking you with interrogating potential suspects for stylistic murders, driving out into the city of Los Angeles to find out the facts and deliver justice at the big trial. Like a console-based Phoenix Wright, then? For those of you who don't know, the aformentioned Nintendo series took a light-hearted approach to business in court, ending in comedy twists and packed to the brim with hilarious icons, however in a positive sense that doesn't look to be the case here, anything but! For starters, L.A Noire features some absolutely stunning facial animations (compare the on-screen portrayal to the real world actor and you'll be blown away) and a deliciously retro 40s soundtrack, but even if you muck up a case and get things wrong unlike the Wright titles it won't be an instant game over, instead showing you the dire (or funny?) reprecussions of your mistakes. This all sounds very different to the Red Deads and GTAs of old, and I'm fascinated to see whether L.A Noire can balance mystery and action as only Rockstar can!
