2011 Films To Watch #3: Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (5/5) was a superb fantasy adventure for all ages, introducing Johnny Depp as the somewhat insane bucanner Captain Jack Sparrow and pitting him against Geoffrey Rush's (who's recently appeared in The King's Speech, a period drama out now at cinemas that I can't recommend highly enough!) Hector Barbossa in a delicious combination of retro and modern films. But, as Ben Kenobi once said- or rather something along these lines- "Then came the dark days. Then came...the sequels." Neither Dead Man's Chest (3/5) nor At World's End (4/5) came anywhere close to topping Walt Disney's first effort, venturing into territory to dark for a PG comedy and all but killing off the characters of former newcomers Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. From what we have seen of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, though, the light-hearted fun and spirit of Curse are set to place the franchise back on form this year! Continuing on from where the threequel left off, Captain Jack is on the hunt now for the Fountain of Youth, travelling to London and reportedly deserted islands in his search and teaming up/facing off with series regulars Joshamee Gibbs and Barbossa respectively, plus hooking up with Penelope Cruz's brash heroine Angelica. As usual for Sparrow, things are never as simple as first suspected, however: Angelica is the daughter of dreaded pirate menace Blackbeard, who vows to take the Fountain or take every opposer to his immortality down trying. The competition for my Top 3 Most Anticipated films of 2011 was stiff, but that On Stranger Tides hasn't got the top spot is only out of a slight lack of faith- on no account does that mean it can't return...
