2011 Films To Watch #7: Never Let Me Go

That British drama Never Let Me Go opened dozens of film festivals last year to universal acclaim should already warrant excitement from viewers, but that academy award winners Carey Mulligan (first brought to light as the main protagonist of Doctor Who's Blink then receiving several roles in greats like Public Enemies and An Education), Andrew Garfield (also discovered on Who, more recently proving more likeable than Jesse Eisenburg in The Social Network and already set to take over from Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in the 2012 reboot) and Keira Knightley (who I presume needs no introduction) only raises my anticipation even further. The premise is an intriguing one- human clones are being mass-produced in a not entirely distant future to serve as stem cell donors to their 'real' counterparts, having a life span of just twenty years before becoming the provider for an obligatory operation that will save their original selves but kill the clones. As clones Kathy (Mulligan) and Tommy (Garfield) form a romance, much to the discontent of their childhood friend Ruth (Knightley), they begin to think they could convince the government that they want to marry (a get-out clause to allow clones a few more years of life), only to find things are lot more complicated for them and those who they are intended to save in an emotional climax. Adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro's award-winning novel that has been called "tragic", "heartbreaking" but also "the best book of the last decade", Never Let Me Go makes its debut in British cinemas everywhere on February 11th, and I for one cannot wait!
