Elijah Wood Confirmed For The Hobbit
Fresh off the start of filming on The Hobbit last month, New Line Cinema have confirmed that Elijah Wood will reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in the 2012 adaptation. The Hobbit, directed by Peter Jackson (the helm of the acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy), will be split into two parts to enable as much of the novel as possible to be included. Hardcore readers of author J.R.R Tolkien's prequel piece to his fantasy epics will likely be more than a little surprised at Wood's involvement- Bilbo Baggins' son does not feature in the original 1937 tale as it takes place decades before the fictional saga known as the 'War of the Ring' by the fan-base. Rumor has it, Wood will star as a young Baggins (via CGI) who discovers his father's book "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" (the same novel, but written in the story universe by Bilbo), and narrates it as he reads it for the first time, at which point the film switches to a narrative from The Hobbit's protagonist Bilbo's point of view. Other than Elijah Wood (29) having confirmed his return to the Lord of the Rings world, nothing's definite yet in terms of plot or screen time, but we'll keep you updated as the July 2012 release date nears ever closer. In addition, Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen are rumoured to return to their roles as Gandalf and Gollum respectively on the project after breaking their ties when financial difficulties almost saw the flicks cancelled.
