Should you give in to the darkness in this sequel?
February's got a few exciting video game releases in store for us, many of which are on their way very soon. One such new title is The Darkness II, 2K Games' latest horror fantasy brawler which has amassed a lot of anticipation from fans of the original. Here's a round-up of the critics' verdicts on the game so far...
IGN (80%)- "Despite some problems with polish and a story that takes time to develop something great, The Darkness II ends up as an early treat in the new year. The narrative elements help the pacing considerably, breaking up Jackie's engaging and brutal murderfests."
DIGITAL SPY (4/5)- "A well-presented and engaging horror-themed first-person shooter, with an admirable campaign that is utterly linear yet also hugely engrossing."
DESTRUCTOID (75%)- "The single-player experience features some genuine emotion in its narrative, something games which don't feature skull-extricating tentacles rarely manage to accomplish. While the Vendettas co-op content feels lacklustre, it's not bad and serves to pad out this short but delightful game."
EUROGAMER (7/10)- "Ultimately, it's the unique style that makes The Darkness II worth your time. The FPS genre is starting to show signs of life in more eccentric ways. By concentrating on character, story and giddy comic-book excess, this is a more compelling 2012 offering than it would have been in 2008."
What can we fathom from the critics so far, then? This new horror title seems to be packing in innovation within its narrative despite not offering anything new in terms of the FPS genre, and thus any fans of the original Darkness may well want to pick up the sequel when it ships to game retailers this Friday.
