Skylanders: Giants Announced

Just another Giant cash-grabbing exercise?
Well, as cynical as this might sound, with the money that Toys For Bob and Activision grabbed from their cash-hoarding action figure/video game cross-promotion Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure last Autumn, it comes as no surprise that the latter publisher has decided to announce a new entry in this franchise for release later this year. Skylanders: Giants, as the sequel will be called, introduces eight "highly collectable" new figures more than twice the size of last year's toys, each of whom can play a part in the more narrative-driven incarnation of this kids-orientated title. If the price point for the action figures is a little more reasonable, and the need for the figures to get Achievements and Trophies a little less extensive, there could be even more appeal for Skylanders: Giants among hardcore Spyro fans, but the removal of the titular purple dragon from the sequel's title may just represent how eager Activision are to milk as much money from this proverbial cash cow as possible with or without the once iconic PlayStation mascot. Giants will ship to retailers in the third quarter of the year.
