GDC: New Mario Game Announced
Want a Nintendo 3DS, but worried about whether the price (£230, in case you were wondering) will justify the software? Satoru Iwata apparently anticipated this, announcing not just the release date of June for upcoming remake The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time but a brand new Super Mario game coming in 2012 exclusively for the 3D handheld. Details are predictably scarce right now, with only a temporary logo and some screenshots of the title in its current state, yet Iwata did reveal that the next Mario would finally allow players to judge properly how to hit a ? block due to the 3DS' newfound graphical depth, something he had been dreaming for in the franchise since 1996. Mario 3DS is being developed by the team who brought us the superb Galaxy games on Wii (the first scoring 9.5/10 and the sequel 10 here!), and from these images we can see that the latest adventure for everyone's favourite Italian plumber looks to harken back to the simpler days of Super Mario 64, where the character did not possess any fancy gimmicks found outside of the side-scrolling originals, something many fans have been desperate for while Mario went up into space and mucked about with gravity. Keep checking On-Screen for more GDC and Mario 3DS updates.
