The tale of our modern Assassin reaches its climax in AC3!
Desmond Miles has been our consistent modern hero in the Assassin's Creed franchise, a cipher through which we have seen past heroes and legends and percieved them with a strange degree of hindsight. Ubisoft Montreal's creative director Alex Hutchinson has been chatting about what future lies in store for the protagonist in the next entry of the series. Could it be that the character will meet his story's end in Assassin's Creed III? Here's what Hutchinson had to say to The Verge on the matter: "Assassin's Creed was Altair's story, Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical figures without having to necessarily understand Desmond's story. But we do eventually have to wrap it up. I think what you can do is finish it. It's not the only conceit you can use. I always pitched it to the guys on the game to think of it almost like Star Trek: each game is a season, each big number is a sub-title." That's an interesting way of looking at it, and I think Alex is right to see it as if we've had four seasons of an overarching show, with the numbered instalments 'rebooting' the storyline while keeping the overall Desmond arc. Without Desmond, of course, the 'show' will become something else entirely, yet that's a very enticing proposition for the franchise! Assassin's Creed III breaks into stores everywhere on October 31st.
