ComicCon: Merlin Future Details Revealed

The Die Is Cast This September...
Merlin fans everywhere were excited to see Colin Murphy, Kate McGrath and co-creator Johnny Capps host a panel for the fifth season at this year's ComicCon convention, and in terms of new details and Series Five tidbits, the team did not disappoint! You'll see here the brand new poster for the new run, with new looks for many of the characters, a strange tower in the distance and the cool tagline 'The Die Is Cast'. Could this mean that everything revolves around prophecies and chance this time around, and thus that the whole of the Arthurian legend is up for grabs? We'll have to wait and see! Here's a roundup of all the latest Series Five news...
  • THREE YEARS LATER- In an interview that took place the day before the panel, Colin and Kate confirmed that the new series would take place three years after Gwen's appointment as Queen Of Camelot in the finale of Series Four, The Sword In The Stone Part 2. Morgana has apparently been held captive by the deadly, adult wizard Mordred in her time with her new dragon Aithusa, and is now apparently eager for vengeance...She will seemingly feature more in Camelot than before, perhaps in the shadows?
  • THE RETURN OF THE HEAD- It was confirmed early on in the panel by Capps that former series regular Anthony Head will return to the role of Uther Pendragon in Series Five as a guest star in one story. There are sometimes two-parters, so perhaps this adventure will take the form of one of those, but the question is this- how has Uther survived or been resurrected, or will he appear in extended flashbacks or hallucinations? Let the speculation begin!
  • KILLING WITH A PRICE- If you recall how the last season of Merlin ended, you may remember that our favourite wizard brutally murdered the scheming Agravaine (Nathaniel Parker) in cold blood to keep his secret safe and secure from Arthur and Morgana's knowledge. Series Five will explore the consequences of the young warlock's actions, as well as his constant temptation to kill his enemies and indeed through his psychic connection with the sinister Morded.
  • THE FUTURE BECKONS- So where will Merlin head after Series Five? It appears that the upcoming season may well be the show's last, but Johnny Capps was certainly adamant that the drama will return in some form after that. How, you may ask? I'll let Capps sum it up with a quote direct from the panel: "We're hopefully going to do a trilogy- three movies. We will focus on them when we finish Series Five. One idea we've been playing about with is to reboot the whole series [for the films' narrative]. We would go back in time and start that story again and show different parts that you didn't see in the series. The other idea is to do a continuation, but we haven't decided yet." This exciting piece of news seems to heavily indicate that Series Five will wrap up the Arthurian legend for Merlin in some way, unless one more shorter season is commissioned to air in 2013. I would say that we should expect details either a few weeks into the season or shortly after its finale! Stay tuned...
Merlin returns to BBC1 on September 29th.
