ComicCon: Doctor Who Future Details Revealed

Find out more about what Series Seven holds straight from ComicCon!
We're just over a month away from the return of Doctor Who to our screens, and so Matt Smith, Karen Gillian, Arthur Darvill and execs Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner took to the stage today to once again promote the show's seventh season. There was no new trailer or definitive airdate given (but the money is on what I've put below the bullet points, as Matt all-but-confirmed it yesterday), yet there were a few juicy tidbits handed to us by the Moff and his accomplices that will only serve to increase our appetites for the next trailer reveal. Expect that to come early next month or late in July, but until we bring that to you, here's the roundup of some of the news that was revealed...
  • THE DALEKS ARE BACK- As the ComicCon panel started to reach its conclusion, the Moff started to tease the season's opening episode Asylum Of The Daleks. Steven said we should expect "more Daleks than you've ever seen in one place. It's 'wow'. It's lots and lots and lots of Daleks. It's what we all see when we close our eyes in our TARDIS wallpapered bedrooms." Too true...bring on Episode One!
  • THE TARDIS GOES JURRASIC- Next up on the series' agenda is a trip to a strange spaceship where dinosaurs (yes, Dinosaurs!) lurk...and what better name for the episode could there be than Dinosaurs On A Spaceship?!? The story will feature Empress Nefrititi, pyramids, Edwardian explorers, Rory's dad, and of course the titular headliners, so we're in for one heck of a rollercoaster ride...
  • BEG FOR A TIME LORD'S MERCY- And as if both of those season openers weren't enough, we've then got a Western adventure to send things in a totally different direction! Confirmed to be titled A Town Called Mercy, Episode Three will see the Doctor, Amy and Rory face off against an evil alien cyborg in the Wild West with the help of some trusty American cowboys while riding on horseback. My oh my, Steven Moffat doesn't want us to get a calm episode at all this time around!
  • THE FALL OF THE PONDS: After the Doctor's life is put into extreme danger and the Ponds' relationship is tested to the absolute brink in the reportedly-titled fourth episode Cubed, we'll be heading over to New York to see off Amy and Rory as Doctor Who companions with the help of returnees River Song and the Weeping Angels. Yep, in terms of a mid-season finale it doesn't get much better than this, and when the panel's host said that Steven would never truly dare completely write out the Ponds from the show, the showrunner replied: "You reckon? Enjoy the story, then..." Omnious words, and all involved were saying that the unnamed fifth episode was a very heartbreaking one to write, produce and film, so we should expect tears on the day that the Ponds leave the show!
  • ONWARDS: But of course, Series Seven doesn't end there. After a short break, Doctor Who returns at Christmas for the sixth episode of the season, as the Eleventh Doctor welcomes Jenna-Louise Coleman's character Clara on board the TARDIS, then there are eight more episodes to come in the early months of 2013. Rumour has it that Clara holds a dark secret, though the team rightly didn't talk about her too much with the Pond stars still at the panel. Steven Moffat said that he "[doesn't] think we've ever had a bigger variety of episodes on the show", which could well mean the best is yet to come in terms of the diversity of the second half of Series Seven. Steven also revealed that the Question will come back to haunt the Doctor, and that's it's very important. Matt has no idea how the Question will factor into his Doctor's future, so whether that means it's a part of the Series Seven finale, the 50th Anniversary special and/or Series Eight remains to be seen. When asked by a Dalek-dressed convention goer whether a multi-Doctor story was waiting in the wings, the Moff wouldn't be drawn just yet, but that he made a point of saying "I'm not saying anything" does seem to indicate that something very special is on its way for November 23rd, 2013. For now, though, bring on Series Seven!
Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on August 25th.
