"Before the dark days- before the Empire..." Disney confirm we'll learn backstories in their standalone Star Wars movies.
Walt Disney Pictures have today announced the nature of their upcoming standalone Star Wars standalone movies. Revealed in April, the current release strategy for the studio's newly acquired franchise is as such: Star Wars Episode VII hits cinemas in 2015, a standalone film in 2016, Episode VIII in 2017, another solo film in 2018 and finally (for now) Episode IX will land in 2019. Ambitious as the scheme is, at least it's now apparent that Disney have a firm plan as to where to take George Lucas' beloved universe in the next six years.
Earlier in 2013, studio helm Bob Iger had this to say on the matter of the standalone films: "Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg [screenplay writers] are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga." Rumours have been abound ever since the reveal that Han Solo and Boba Fett might be the primary focus of the two spin-off instalments. Today, though, we've had further light shed on the matter, as Disney CEO Jay Rasulo has called the standalone flicks "origin story films". If the production teams can aspire to a level of success on a par with Batman Begins in terms of redefining iconic heroes from the Star Wars franchise, then there's a strong chance that the franchise could attain a level of quality that's virtually unprecedented in a not-too-distant future that really isn't so far, far away...
Star Wars Episode VII jumps from hyperspace into cinemas worldwide in 2015.
