HBO's hit journalist drama returns for a third season in 2014...
HBO Studios have today announced the production of a third season of their acclaimed journalism drama The Newsroom for broadcast next year. The news comes from lead star Jeff Daniels, who plays News Night anchor Will McAvoy in the series. Daniels posted the following tweet this morning: "It's official. Newsroom is coming back for a Season 3."
At present, The Newsroom is continuing its Season Two broadcast both in the United States and here in the UK, the former region having reached the penultimate instalment while the latter's Sky Atlantic will broadcast Episode Two next Monday. The current nine-part run deals with a catastrophic event that sees one of the News Night team leak a story with potentially government-altering consequences, leading to a legal investigation which could mean the end of the (fictitious) programme.
There's no doubt in this writer's mind that the recommissioning of this bold new drama is a great omen for quality television's reassuring rise in the past few years. Whether it's in the continuing success of programmes like Doctor Who and Sherlock or in the shock acclaim of new dramas such as Game Of Thrones and Breaking Bad, it truly appears to be the case that there's a growing market for programmes that transcend the usual dross of reality TV and aspire to a far greater level of dramatic quality.
The Newsroom continues its Season Two broadcasts every Monday on Sky Atlantic, and will return to Sky Atlantic for its third season in Autumn 2014.
