Best Of Who Awards: Top 5 Greatest Eleventh Doctor Moments

As a new era and a new incarnation of the Time Lord dawn, check out our picks of the best moments of the Eleventh Doctor!
Few viewers would ever have envied Matt Smith in his challenge of adopting the role of the Doctor in succession to David Tennant bringing us one of the most popular incarnations of the Time Lord yet. Nevertheless, over the last four years, Matt has grown tremendously during his time in this career-defining role, with countless moments in his three seasons helping to define an intelligent, caring incarnation of the character who fans have come to know and love.

Of course, as we near the end of Matt's time on the show- with the 50th Anniversary Special and the 2013 Christmas Special marking his final adventures in the TARDIS- we must inevitably look back at the years that we as fans have spent with this incarnation. Why? Well, to find the greatest highlights of the past four years, of course. Without further ado, then, here's a special video-infused edition of our Best Of Who Awards, as we discover the Eleventh Doctor's Top 5 Greatest Moments...

5. THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION/RINGS OF AHKATEN SPEECH (TIE)- Our first entry on this prestigious list is in fact a draw, with two fantastic scenes from Matt Smith warranting a mention. The first instance derives from Flesh & Stone, as the Doctor gleefully concocts a solution to his party's impending annihilation at the hands of the Weeping Angels. After that is one of the solely consistent elements of praise in Neil Cross' divisive Series Seven tale The Rings of Ahkaten- the Doctor's valiant speech as he rallies against a seemingly omnipotent Sun God, offering his memories as a final sacrifice to the supposed deity...Check out a sound clip of the latter defining moment below.
4. IT WAS DEFINITELY TRENZALORE- This one heralds from the most recent televised Doctor Who episode broadcast on BBC One, The Name of the Doctor. Once Clara has engaged in her dream call with the Paternoster Gang and River, it only leaves her to impart the truth of the Doctor's grave to the Time Lord at her home. Sure enough, the time traveller recognises the name of Trenzalore in an instant, reducing him to tears when he realises that he must discover his resting place and unleash his greatest secret. This is a melancholic and beautifully effective moment from Matt's often controlled and subdued incarnation.
3. BASICALLY, RUN- It would be impossible to complete a list rounding up Matt's greatest scenes in the role without citing a brilliantly memorable one taken from his very first full story, The Eleventh Hour. With Prisoner Zero captured and executed, the newly regenerated Doctor calls upon the Atraxi to return to Earth and recieve a justice of their own. His solution? To remind them who has protected the Earth for almost a thousand years, and of the fate that awaits them should they elect to return to this defended planet. It's a quintessential Eleventh Doctor moment, one that defines the character again marvellously in his early days.
2. LET SOMEBODY ELSE TRY FIRST- Another unforgettable instance of pure brilliance on the parts of both Steven Moffat and Matt himself, the Eleventh Doctor's rousing soliloquy against an armada of his allied foes remains another of his greatest moments four years later. The Pandorica Opens was already a sublime opening episode in one of the most intelligent two-part finales Doctor Who has given us before this speech, yet it is the rallying call to arms here that truly cements this tale as one of the best of its era!
1. YOU WANT TO WATCH ME WHEN I'M CONFIDENT- Ultimately, though, for this writer only one scene out of Matt's roster of 'greatest hits' could ever truly top such a list. It's in the second episode of Series Six, Day of the Moon, that Matt proves that the Eleventh Doctor is a brilliant force to be reckoned with, besting the Silence in a ludicrously intelligent manner by taking their modus operandi and turning it against them with a simple television clip that will (quite literally) change the world. See this defining moment of a superb Doctor's highlight-filled era in a video below that rounds up many of these great scenes...
