Who News: New 50th Special, Convention Details Confirmed

Introducing John Hurt...as the Doctor. WHAT? Discover more details on the new Doctor and more right now!
It seems that in the past few days, we've had something of a flurry of new Doctor Who news reveals and announcements, and given the long wait until the 50th Anniversary Special, we fans certainly shouldn't complain. Indeed, the aforementioned feature-length episode is one of a number of hot topics among the latest news releases, with a particularly juicy tidbit having crawled to the surface of media attention courtesy of a wordy costume director chatting with Prince Charles.

For all the latest news on that detail slip, as well as a number of other exciting Doctor Who related matters, you need only cast your eyes below:

  • INTRODUCING JOHN HURT...AS THE 8.5TH DOCTOR- First up, the most exciting news of the lot- it seems that we now at least vaguely know the role of John Hurt in the 50th Anniversary Special. As speculated by many fans since The Name of the Doctor's broadcast in May, it appears that Hurt's incarnation will entail a moment from between the Eighth (Paul McGann) and Ninth (Christopher Eccleston) Doctors' lives within the Time War. Quite what the Eighth Doctor did "without choice, in the name of peace and sanity" to provoke such a fracture in the Doctor's regenerations remains to be seen. Speaking to Prince Charles, costume designer Howard Burden called Hurt's incarnation a "dark Doctor" deriving from the "gap between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn't see a regeneration". It's certainly food for thought for speculative fans, and we can expect to discover more details at ComicCon later this month.
  • MORE 50TH CELEBRATION DETAILS- Earlier this year, BBC Worldwide announced the development of the Doctor Who 50th Celebration convention to launch at the EXCel centre in London this November. Today we have learned more details on the matter- guests confirmed to star in the three theatre panels include Matt Smith, Tom Baker, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, with the three major panels being titled The Eleventh Hour, Regenerations and SFX. Tickets cost £50 for adults and £25 for children up to the age of 16. The Doctor Who 50th Celebration convention will take place on the weekend of November 22nd-24th.
  • RELIVE NEW MISSING EPISODES- Well, kind of. Doctor Who Magazine have today announced the publication of Doctor Who Magazine: The Missing Adventures- The Second Doctor Volume One in WHSmith and other magazine retailers later this month. The DWM Special will bring together film shots of lost episodes of Doctor Who in their entirety to effectively 'show' whole missing tales, including The Power of the Daleks, The Highlanders, The Underwater Menace, The Moonbase, The Macra Terror and The Faceless Ones. Doctor Who Magazine: The Missing Adventures- The Second Doctor Volume One will retail £5.99 on Thursday July 11th, and you can check out the cover below.
Doctor Who returns with its blockbuster 50th Anniversary Special this November 23rd on BBC One.
