On top of revealing Avengers: Age of Ultron at their ComicCon panel, Marvel Studios have also today unveiled new details on their upcoming superhero films Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. These three new projects will continue Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise, focusing on different elements of the Avengers universe in order to deepen and expand it during the lead-up to Joss Whedon's high-octane ensemble sequel.
These are a mixture of official announcements and glimpses fans had at footage from the three upcoming Disney flicks. Here's our guide to everything you need to know fresh from ComicCon...
THOR: THE DARK WORLD
- Other than a surprise appearance from Tom Hiddleston in character as Loki at the panel, new details here were fairly light.
- Fans attending the panel saw a new trailer likely to release within the next month, teasing CGI rock monsters laying siege to Asgard, Jane Foster giving Loki a slap for the Battle of New York, Thor battles Malkeith and Loki betraying his brother once again, seemingly (SPOILER ALERT) cutting off the Asgardian Avenger's hand!
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER
- Scarlet Johnasson's Black Widow has a much bigger role to play this time around, sharing the screen with Cap for the majority of the motion picture and showing a new side to herself after the harrowing events of Avengers Assemble. She and Cap will come into conflict morally on a number of matters, though!
- The Winter Soldier will without a doubt be the film's main antagonist- there's no danger of any overcrowding criticisms here a la Iron Man 2 and Spider-Man 3.
- Again, a timed-exclusive trailer for The Winter Soldier ran, featuring shots of secondary villain Crossbones, plenty of Black Widow battles, the appearance of Cap's sidekick Falcon and a SHIELD helicarrier crashing towards the planet Earth.
- Cobie Smaulders will reprise her role as Agent Maria Hill too, an announcement that follows hot on the heels of her confirmed appearance in the pilot episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
- Doctor Who's Karen Gillan has gone bald for her role as Nebula, one of a team of aliens in league with Avengers Assemble's hidden antagonist Thanos. Many expected Thanos to be the main antagonist of either this piece and/or Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it seems that his dominant role in the franchise has been held back until Phase Three when characters such as Doctor Strange will be introduced.
- A third new trailer debuted for Guardians too, commented on by fans today as teasing a true science-fiction epic which doesn't look too bogged down by CGI despite requiring it to power the look and feel of its titular team. Expect more details on this one once Thor: The Dark World is done, dusted and released.
Thor: The Dark World hammers into cinemas worldwide on October 30th, Captain America: The Winter Soldier ricochets in on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy materialises everywhere on August 1st, 2014.
