Colin Firth Is The King Of The BAFTAs
Colin Firth's sensational period drama The King's Speech (5/5) was nominated for no less than fourteen BAFTAs at the 2010 awards ceremony, and perhaps more impressively managed to scoop half of these, winning Outstanding British Film; Best Actor; Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush); Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter); Best Screenplay; Best Soundtrack and Best Film in a vast sweep of success at the event aired on BBC One from the Royal Opera House last night. Natalie Portman's portrayal of Nina Sayers in Black Swan won her Best Actress, and her roles don't end there this year, with appearances set for No Strings Attached and Thor before the Summer. Facebook flick The Social Network recieved Best Adapted Screenplay, while Toy Story 3 got Best Animated Film and True Grit (my review of which hits soon) Best Cinematography, in other words lighting and location work. Best Costume Design and Best Makeup (surely the most coveted award?) went to Alice In Wonderland, and Inception managed both Best Production Design and Best Special Visual Effects. Even The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo made an appearance, topping the Best Foreign Film category, plus The Orange Rising Star Award went to Tom Hardy (who recently appeared in Inception and will play Bane in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises), and finally the Harry Potter films were honoured with an award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema (no trailer for Deathly Hallows: Part 2, though- come on!!). Jonathan Ross did wonders once again hosting the 64th Annual BAFTAs, remarking that he found out both how to handle money in The Social Network and that cinemas wouldn't give money back no matter how hard he tried after watching critcally panned The Last Airbender. Another great year for the BAFTAs, then- will the Boy Who Lived, Captain America, War Horse, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hangover: Part II or Kung Fu Panda 2 get awards next year? More film prizes to come on February 28th, too, with the Oscars in the US!
