X-Men 2 VS Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Sequels are never as highly regarded as their predecessors, but sometimes they can make an impact. Let's match up the second X-Men and Fantastic Four films to see which does its franchise more justice:
PLOT- Now we're past the origins tale, X-Men 2 really comes into its own, looking into Wolverine's inception and giving hints of a mutant war. F4, on the other hand, tries too hard to bring 2 major comic book heroes and villains together in a mish-mash story that made little sense. WINNER: X-MEN
COMIC BOOK HERITAGE- To its credit, Rise brings in tons of comic book elements, while X-Men 2 just teases the Phoenix and introduces Nightcrawler, so the former wins for innovation. WINNER: FANTASTIC FOUR
CAST- Previously Fantastic Four would have won outright for its team's chemistry, yet now the gig is beginning to feel old, and Ian Mckellen and Famke Jennsen do wonders as Magneto and Jean. WINNER: X-MEN
ENDING- X-Men 2 climaxes with the death of Jean and subsequently Phoenix's rise, while Fantastic Four 2 just ends on a lame CGI battle between the Surfer and Galactus. Dull, much? WINNER: X-MEN
OVERALL- Unlike before, X-Men 2's core premise is a more appealing one, and it definitely lives up in execution much better than Rise, and thus X-Men 2 wins out over Rise of the Silver Surfer big time.
