2012 In Review: January

The first month of a new year in entertainment examined in detail!
Welcome to another of our new features for 2012, where we'll be looking back on each of the individual months and highlights of the year. For starters, let's reflect on the highs and lows of January...
THE GOOD:
  • Sherlock was a brilliant showcase of the BBC's potential for great television this year, packing three stellar episodes with a finale that'll have fans speculating for the remainder of 2012!
  • Public Enemies and Birdsong were great additions to the TV roster too, and it was nice to see a well-rounded ceremony of much-deserved wins at the National Television Awards.
  • Steven Spielberg's War Horse was a breathtaking filmic masterpiece that I have no doubt will be high on my Top 15 Best Films Of 2012 list come December!
  • Disney Interactive Studios 'announced' Epic Mickey 2 for release on 360, PS3 and Wii this Autumn via an indiscrete newsletter. Travellers Tales', meanwhile, revealed the insanely cool LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, and Capcom revealed Resident Evil 6.
  • Alesha Dixon and David Walliams were confirmed as the new judges for this year's run of Britain's Got Talent.
  • I revealed that your choice for Game of the Year 2011 was none other than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a fantastic RPG with almost infinity replay value that was easily worth its award.
  • There's hope of a British Film Week too, if reports were to be believed!
  • The first trailers for Resident Evil: Retribution, American Pie: College Reunion and StreetDance 2 (still can't quite believe they've made that...) hit the net, with promises of an Amazing Spider-Man trail this month as well.
  • The nominations for this year's Oscars were revealed, and for the most part the public concurred.
  • Grown Ups 2 was announced and confirmed for release in Summer 2013.
  • It looks like the Hunger Games team are confident in their upcoming film, as they went and commissioned a second movie with its writer and director two months ahead of release.
  • Luther, Death In Paradise, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Call The Midwife and The Glee Project were all confirmed to make returns to British television in the near future.
  • 'Untold Story' viral marketing campaigns began to surface for the Amazing Spider-Man reboot!
  • Finally, we discovered that Nick Fury may be getting his own origins movie in 2015 and that Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer are back on board for the sequel to X-Men: First Class.
THE BAD:
  • It seemed that January was in essence a month chock-full of delays and cancellations: Gotham City Impostors; X-COM; Hansel And Gretel: Witch-Hunters; Max Payne 3; Ghost Recon: Future Soldier; Inversion and Aliens: Colonial Marines were all pushed back from their original release dates in the space of just four weeks. Sheesh, let's hope that's a trend that doesn't continue...
  • We'll Take Manhattan was definitely NOT one of the reasons to get excited for the BBC's television line-up in 2012, a dull and overly-ambitious drama with little notable depth or substance.
  • Pirahna 3DD has turned out so dire it's been moved from cinema release to instant DVD release!
  • And just what was up with DC's new logo?
SUMMARY:
An initially quiet month for entertainment ultimately turned out to provide some real surprises both in releases and news, and while the various delays were depressing, they didn't dampen what had undoubtedly been a great period for the industry.
