Will it flop like its predecessors? Only a year till we find out!
Universal have today confirmed the production of Riddick, the latest entry in the best-selling fantasy film franchise starring Vin Diesel. "The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga sees Diesel reprise his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy, left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless," says the new movie's marketing team. "The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend on the planet in search of their bounty. With time running out and a storm on the horizon, his new hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy." It sounds like a decent set-up for the latest comic book adaptation, and Vin Diesel's on-screen repetoire as the infamous antihero has been strong so far, but the singular title does leave me to wonder whether this is considered as a 'reboot' of sorts, and thus whether the tone and narrative are going to suffer as a result of making the sequel accessible to newcomers. Riddick will commence shooting in Montreal soon, and is currently targeted for a late 2013 release.
