...Nope, this one you're better off letting go of.
Never Let Me Go is sadly just one of those films that tries hard to get its adaptation of a stellar novel right, only to falter in a variety of areas and thus suffer as an overall feature. My adversity towards the movie doesn't come due to the acting by any strech of the imagination- leads Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield are wonderful showcases of British performing talent throughout, blending touching, often haunting drama with lighthearted comedy perfectly, and pitching the tragic denounement well in light of the dark clone-ethics water the storyline treads. I hate to say it, but it's the transition of Kashiro Isiguro's wonderful plot to screen that seems to have caused the biggest problem for the filmmakers, as many scenes feel misguided and lacking in confident direction both with regards to the narrative and the camerawork, and that leaves the feature feeling almost totally devoid of the emotional resonance it clearly tries to have by its climax. I like a good, slow-paced drama/romance as much as the next film-goer, yet that Never Let Me Go expects so much investment from the viewer, especially given its haphazard tone and stylistic presentation, is a major pitfall that has undoubtedly held it back from any chance at critical or fan acclaim.
