Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's new comedy grabs our Best Release award for June in a month of varied releases...
It has to be said that June has proved to be one of the more disappointing months for entertainment in 2013- not because it was lacking in new releases, but instead because very few of these new releases deserved a 4.5* score, with none of them coming anywhere close to the 5* mark. With this in mind, it comes down to a 4*-scored release to win our Best Release award for the month.
Thankfully, This Is The End at least deserves its victory in a month of underwhelming new releases. Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jay Bruchel, Craig Robinson and Jonah Hill are undoubtedly the movie's highlight as its lead stars, playing themselves in a humorous amalgamation of franchise references, celebrity cameos and apocalyptic escapades. This great chemistry is hampered somewhat by the disappointing climax to the film, yet that isn't enough to stop the viewer loving the piece as a whole thanks to its strong structure and brilliant performances.
So while This Is The End doesn't quite stand-out as Best Release from its competitors so strongly as its predecessors have, it nevertheless justifies its place on top with its narrative innovation and terrific cast performances across the board. This is a must-see entry in the Summer of Film, one of the best comedy movies we've seen released in 2013 and elsewhere too- here's hoping that this is not the end for a great new comic franchise!
