Fox have this week spilled the first plot details on their upcoming TV detective drama Gotham. Scheduled to enter production next month, the show will feature prized DC character Jim Gordon as its protagonist, and is set a decade before Bruce Wayne's transformation into his Caped Crusading alter-ego.
Even so, it turns out that the series will not find itself wanting for fan-favourite Batman villains or allies. Think Smallville or Arrow, albeit with a greater emphasis on Gordon than this particular strand of DC comic-books' primary superhero. Here's a round-up of all of the key details straight from the bat (or rather Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly)'s mouth:
- REILLY ON GOTHAM'S MOST WANTED- The series will apparently focus on "how [Batman's nemeses] became who they were, what events led up to these characters becoming [their alter-egos]". Iconic adversaries confirmed to feature in the first season include the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman and the Joker.
- ON BRUCE WAYNE'S ROLE- "This is an origin story for Bruce Wayne. The actor [playing him from the age of 13] will grow-up, if we do our job well he'll be a young man and ready [to become the Dark Knight] by the end. Which isn't to say we might not skip ahead..."
- ON THE SHOW'S TONE- During Fox's official press conference, Reilly also teased that viewers will see "Gotham on the brink" in the first season, which will take on an allegedly "operatic" and "larger-than-life" tone more akin to that present in 2008's hit Batman sequel The Dark Knight than that of last year's Superman reboot Man of Steel. There are no plans right now for the programme to adhere to the continuity of the proposed DC Cinematic Universe, a revelation which sadly seems to ensure that a narrative mythology on the scale of Marvel's film and TV franchise is out of the question.
Gotham premières on Fox this Autumn.
