A new game is afoot, as Sherlock's exec producers reveal that the show will return...
Executive producer Steven Moffat has today confirmed that Sherlock will return for a fourth season. The hit detective drama's third series is currently broadcasting on BBC One, with its finale His Last Vow set to air on the channel this weekend.
The news from Doctor Who's showrunner comes after Benedict Cumberbatch hinted at the development of a new run for the detective drama last year, but signals a more official update on this front. @BakerStBabes posted Moffat's reveal on Twitter this evening fresh from a BFI screening of Series Three's third instalment, with Moffat also having confirmed that filming dates are currently being discussed with Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and that he and co-creator Gatiss have "plotted out Series Four and Five" already.
Considering just how many of Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic short stories the production team have adapted in the course of the show's first three seasons, that they're plundering the 19th Century author's works even further might either come as a thrill or a concern to fans, depending on their individual response to the current run's tonal departure from its predecessors. Despite Sherlock's ongoing success in the realms of UK ratings, the BBC will undoubtedly want to avoid a sense of diminishing returns in future seasons of the programme, leaving Moffat and Gatiss with a great challenge in securing the foreseeable future of their latest phenomenon.
Sherlock concludes with His Last Vow on BBC One this Sunday January 12th.
