Angelina Jolie has played femme fatales galore, but her latest role promises to resurrect the magic of her career...
Walt Disney Pictures have today released the second teaser trailer for their upcoming fantasy film Maleficent. A prequel to the studio's animated classic Sleeping Beauty, this live-action effort stars Angelina Jolie as its titular villainess, as well as Harry Potter's Imelda Staunton and Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi in supporting capacities.
Developing upon the tone of the début trailer released last November, this preview (below) gives a strong indication that the movie will walk the blurred line between pure fantasy and the altogether darker genre of fantasy-horror. Rest assured, though, that with Disney as its distributors, the final established tonal territory is more likely to end up as whimsical than anything else, with a production along the lines of the March 2013 prequel Oz: The Great and Powerful probably the ultimate goal for the studio here. Oz's commercial magic was ultimately limited, however, and in terms of avoiding the same box office failure this time around, a little more subversion of our expectations of the primary characters from writers Paul Dini and Linda Woolverton would be a promising foundation.
Maleficent casts a spell over cinemas worldwide on May 30th.
