Activision and Sledgehammer Games have today announced the development of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare for release later this year. Judging by the teaser trailer (below), the eleventh instalment in the now-annualized franchise of first-person-shooter video games will take place in the near future and will star House of Cards' Kevin Spacey as its central antagonist.
Of course, all of these details were originally intended by Activision to emerge via a 'Reveal Event' on Sunday, but that the début trail leaked on the web earlier this morning pretty much forced their hand, prompting the publishers to officially release the video prematurely. As much as we've laid criticisms before the feet of the COD series in the past, there's definitely a lot of potential showcased in Advanced Warfare's first video preview, and if we hadn't been burned several times by Infinity Ward and Treyarch, we'd almost be willing to recommend a pre-order. Even so, to say that we're excited for Sledgehammer's first solo COD effort would be an understatement, and that in itself is a refreshing thought which stands in vast contrast to our thoughts on the franchise's previous announcement trails!
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will retail for Xbox One and other consoles (the full platform list will be announced this Sunday, May 4th in Game Informer's cover story) this November 4th.
UPDATE (02-05-14, 2.15pm): Amazon.co.uk have just confirmed that Advanced Warfare will launch on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC.
