Skylanders and Disney Infinity will face off against a new rival very soon!
Nintendo have this week announced the development of a series of near-field-communication (NFC) peripherals for use with their WiiU and 3DS consoles and several still-to-be-announced software titles in the not too distant future. The news landed at the publisher's Fiscal Year 2014 Investor Briefing on Thursday, and although precise details on the hardware (and software) were few and far between, we've been told to expect plenty more on both fronts at their E3 2014 online conference.
Here's what we do know, though: since the Nintendo WiiU already has built-in NFC technology, it'll need no additional peripherals beyond the figures themselves (an example of which can be seen above in the form of- naturally- Super Mario). 3DS owners, on the other hand, aren't so lucky, as they'll need to purchase a nifty add-on device which will enable them to port these plastic characters into those aforementioned upcoming software products that are built to incorporate them into the play experience. It's safe to assume that the experience itself will work in a similar vein to the Disney Infinity and Skylanders series, allowing younger players to substitute in a range of different classic Nintendo characters in order to solve a variety of platforming-themed challenges. As we've seen with those other two franchises, projects such as these tend to be a financial shoo-in for the developers and/or publishers at the helm, and if anyone is in desperate need of a commercially successful new venture right now, it's most certainly Nintendo...
The company's E3 2014 Digital Event will air on June 10th at 1pm (GMT).
