Paramount Pictures have this week released the first theatrical trailer for their impending science-fiction blockbuster Transformers: Age of Extinction. Set four years after the devastating climactic confrontation of 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon (4*), the first instalment in a new trilogy of Michael Bay-directed CGI-a-thons will star Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammar, Sophia Myles (Doctor Who: The Girl in the Fireplace) and Jack Reynor at the forefront of its human cast.
Naturally, though, they're once again going to play second fiddle to the 'bots, and if nothing else, Bay's talent for bringing explosion-ridden, beautifully-animated computer generated battles to the big-screen doesn't seem to have faded in the slightest during the three years that have elapsed since his last Cybertron-themed motion picture. 12 Years A Slave or Frozen this most certainly is not, but Age of Extinction may yet surprise us if the promising second trailer (below) is anything to go by. In any other month, we'd only be cautiously optimistic about its commercial prospects, but since the only other major filmic releases next month are How to Train Your Dragon 2, Edge of Tomorrow and The Fault in our Stars (all of which have every right to succeed but probably won't rake in the dollars to the same degree), the odds are (as The Hunger Games' Effie Trinket) seemingly in its favour.
Transformers: Age of Extinction mobilizes in cinemas worldwide on June 27th (US)/July 10th (UK).
