ABC and Marvel Studios have today announced the commissioning of a second season of their detective drama Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Based in the same narrative universe as the Avengers film franchise, the series adopts a more grounded perspective on superheroes and the repercussions of their recent emergence on Earth, interacting with storylines from recent big-screen outings such as Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier all the while.
Moreso than any other studio which has been preparing to unveil their 2014/15 renewals and cancellations, ABC have kept us on tenterhooks as to the future of Agents until today. If anything, however, their secretive approach of late has only enhanced our anticipation for Season Two (well, combined with the rapidly increasing quality of the show's recent episodes, of course). No regular cast members have been confirmed to star in the programme's next run as of yet, but since Clark Gregg (Coulson), Chloe Bennett (Skye) and Brett Dalton (Ward) have all tweeted to confirm the re-commission, we're fairly certain that the vast majority of the team will live to fight another day in next week's season finale.
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. concludes its action-packed first season with "Beginning of the End" on ABC this Tuesday, May 13th and continues with "The Only Light in the Darkness" tonight (May 9th) on Channel 4 at 8pm. Season Two will première on ABC this Autumn.
