Alleigant Two-Part Film Adaptation Announced

Yet another teen drama film franchise hops aboard the two-part finale bandwagon...
Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate Studios have this week announced the production of a two-part film adaptation of the final novel in Veronica Roth's Divergent series. Titled Allegiant, the franchise's third instalment was first published last November and was met with fairly positive reviews from the press upon its release.

In fairness, we could have seen this particular announcement coming. Ever since Warner Brothers elected to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two fully-fledged motion pictures in 2010 and 2011, other studios have been more than happy to follow suit with their flagship franchises, the most prominent examples of which are probably Lionsgate's two-part adaptations of Breaking Dawn and Mockingjay and Peter Jackson's arguably overstuffed Hobbit trilogy. Given that a whole three years stand between us and Allegiant- Part 2's release, it's far too early to call whether Summit's split will substantially enhance the profits gained by the studio from the franchise, but in our honest opinion, the trend of two-part franchise finales needs to stop at some point so as to allow a return to creative innovation being favoured over excessive commercial gain, and there's no reason why Allegiant won't be the project which forces this departure from the increasingly worrying industrial trend to come to pass.

Insurgent sneaks into cinemas worldwide on March 20th, 2015, while Allegiant- Part 1 lands on March 18th, 2016 and Allegiant- Part 2 brings the Divergent film franchise's overarching narrative to its dramatic conclusion on March 24th, 2017.
